Masonry & Tuck Pointing

The waterproofing of building walls is a complicated and complex matter. New buildings designed without input from waterproofing specialists could be doomed to endure years of water intrusion problems. Older buildings are often in need of constant upkeep to prevent water migration to the interior. This could be due to inadequate flashing systems, poor drainage and weep systems, and/or deteriorated materials. Water intrusion will damage interior finishes, further degrade exterior substrate and adversely affect working/living conditions thus, in turn, diminishing the value of the property.

Masonry wall assemblies rely on redundant wall assemblies to perform at their peak. The thought is that this redundancy gives you some protection from breaches/failures at the outer wall assembly. This is somewhat true if the wall assembly was constructed as designed. In today’s fast paced construction market we find this does not happen as often as we would like. This means that repointing a structure and keeping it pointed is critical. Repointing is the process of removing damaged/failing mortar from masonry joints and placing with new mortar to prevent water entry into the wall assembly.
